Remembering The 9/11 Attacks
On 9/11, I worked for the Discovery Channel in Manhattan.
When I stepped out of the subway a co-worker said, “A plane crashed into one of the Twin Towers”. At the time, we didn’t panic. We thought it must be a small civilian plane, like a Cessna. Just pilot error. We went up to the office which was lined with televisions.
They were showing the hit on the first tower. As soon as the 2nd plane hit, I sent my team home. I stayed in the office long enough to get a call from my brother, an officer in the Coast Guard. He was serving at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington DC, near the Pentagon.
I assured him I was fine.
It wasn’t long after when a third plane crashed into the Pentagon.
I left the office and the subway was already closed. Queens Bridge was supposed to be closed as well, but a tough New York woman coerced the police into letting our cab, packed full of people who were strangers to each other, across the bridge. We were the last civilian vehicle over the bridge that day.
The cab driver stopped on the center of the bridge. The first tower had already collapsed. The 2nd tower collapsed as we watched, sending most, perhaps all, of us into tears.
Today’s article was shared by Daryl Fant who was in Manhattan on 9/11, while his brother, Peter Fant, was in Washington DC.
